Growing Up in the 50's--
Was it America's Golden Age?

Do You Remember? I grew up in the 50's. We look back at that time with nostalgia as a kind of golden age of American life. Television, suburbs, mass consumerism, interstate highways, and Elvis were all new, and they were creating sweeping changes. But beneath the mostly-comfortable conformity and affluence, there were undercurrents--the Cold War, racial tensions, roots of the Vietnam war, and McCarthyism. I was planning to study engineering, not history. Why? Sputnik. Sputnik challenged our sense of who we are--our frontier spirit. It's an interesting story. I hope you'll listen.
